There are two Railway attractions within Haigh Woodland Park.
- The 15 inch Narrow Guage Railway
- The Model Railway.
Both attractions provide great value and great fun experiences for families. An alternative way to explore and experience the wonderful woodland of Haigh’s Upper Plantations.
Please note - The 15 inch Narrow Guage Railway is currenlty closed pending redevelopment.
Model Railway
Located at the bottom of the Hall Drive - close to Picnic Area II and the small Play Park, the Model Railway is a great ride on attraction operated by the volunteers of Wigan Model Engineering Society (WMES).
The raised track is ⅓ mile long hosting diesel outline engines which people are invited to sit atop.
The attraction is supported entirely by visitor donations.
2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the formation of the WMES at Haigh. Watch out for very special events celebrating the anniversary.
The attraction is open to the public each Sunday (11.00am - 4.00pm in Summer and 11.00am - 3.00pm in Winter) depending on weather.
15" Miniature Gauge Railway
The Main Platform is close to the Model Railway - next to Picnic Area II.
Diesel Powered Locomotives pull carriages on a ¾ mile track cut through the Upper Plantations. Passing ponds, plant and tree-filled woods and the Walled Gardens.
The Railway is currently closed whilst work is underway to redevelop the popular Haigh attraction.
It is hoped that work on the reinstatement pf the service will be complete by the end of 2026 with partial reopening of the track in 2025.
Work is being led by the Volunteers of Haigh Woodland Railway Association.
